What is PPC and how does it work?

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is an online form of marketing which enables advertisers to display ads to people that are searching for terms related to their business, predominantly using Google Ads (AdWords) and Microsoft Ads (Bing Ads).

For example, if you sold digital cameras, you would be able to show in the Google search results whenever someone searched for ‘digital camera’, meaning you would be able to reach new audiences who may never of found your website otherwise.

Most of the time, PPC works on a cost-per-click (CPC) model where every time a user clicks on one our ad sending them to our website, it costs us a small amount. As an example, we may bid £0.18 on the keyword ‘digital camera’, so if we pay £0.18 for a click which results a sale of £280, we would make a great profit.

How can I use PPC to increase brand awareness?

Generating brand awareness using PPC can be done using a number of different methods, with the two main networks being Display and Video. Utilising the Display network allows advertisers to reach 90% of overall internet users across 2+ million websites – with that as our platform, we build audiences who match your target demographics, interests and behaviour and target them.

Alongside Display, we have the Video network which is also known as YouTube Ads. As of 2019, YouTube has 2+ billion monthly users so it’s safe to say that your ideal customers are using the platform. Similarly to Display, we use advanced audience targeting combined with targeting specific channels and videos to reach your ideal customers.

The Search network is also a powerful way to reach potential customers, however, it targeted using keywords rather than audiences.

Which KPIs should be used to measure brand awareness?

Key performance indicators (KPIs) can vary from campaign to campaign, depending on the overall goal. Commonly, we measure brand awareness in two key areas; Brand Recognition and Brand Recall. Brand Recognition focuses on getting users to be able to regonise your brand, using either the name, logo or slogans.

Whereas the goal of Brand Recall is making it that when a user is looking to purchase something, they think of your brand. To measure the two areas, we use metrics such as Impressions, Impression Share, Engagement (Clicks, CTR), overall Traffic (Organic, Referral and Paid).

What is the Google Display Network?

The Google Display Network (GDN) is a network of over 2 million websites, that allows advertisers to reach more than 90% of the internet. There are several methods to target users on the GDN including Keywords, Audiences, Interests, Placements and more.

The reason why it is so powerful, is down to how advanced the targeting can get and in combination with engaging creative it is an effective way to reach new audiences and also re-engaging with previous visitors or customers from your website.

How much does it cost to advertise on Google Display?

Like other PPC networks, it depends on how much you are willing to spend and will vary from industry to industry. Display is priced using several models, cost-per-click (CPC) still being the most common, alongside cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM).

Typically, Display is far less competitive than Search or Shopping, meaning you can drive a significant amount of traffic for a fraction of the cost of what other networks may be. Search and Shopping usually cost more as there is more intent behind the searches being made by users, whereas when a user sees your ad on a website, they may click just to browse as opposed to visiting with the intent to purchase.

How do I advertise on YouTube?

Advertising on YouTube is done through the Google Ads (AdWords) platform.

How much does it cost to advertise on YouTube?

Similarly to Display, YouTube can be priced using various models but the most common bidding strategies include cost-per-click (CPC), cost-per-view (CPV) and cost-per-thousand viewable impressions (vCPM) – which bidding strategy we use is dependant on the goal of the campaign.
